Best of the Best – Batsirayi Dhliwayo

He starred for Ziscosteel and Railstars in the 1990s – winning the Southern Region Induna Foods Player of the month award a number of times in 1995, when he was captain of the Kwekwe-based Zisco.

The former defender recalls being drafted into Clemence Westerhof’s national ream, where he played with players like Joel Luphahla and Dazzy Kapenya as his best memory. The South African-based former star shares his best memories.

My Best team

Bulawayo giants Highlanders who gave me my football break. I was groomed well by renowned youth coach, Ali ‘Baba’ Dube, who taught me primary football skills and opened great doors for my future. Bosso remains the best Zimbabwean team in terms of talent scouting. In the late 1980s, we had gifted players like former Coventry City striker, Peter ‘Ndlovu, Methembe Ndlovu, Wayne Albertin and Thabani Moyo.

My Best Zimbabwean player

There are many of them, but defender Alexander Maseko stood out ahead of the rest. As a defender myself I grew up following and imitating his defensive role. He commanded that central defence with great respect. To me, he was a complete defender.

My most memorable match

Actually, there are two; when our Tongogara beat a then on-song Caps United 2-1 in at home in a league game in 1996, after Thamsanqa Thambo and Godfrey Tamirepi netted the goals. Alois Bunjira got them the consolation. Another one was against Highlanders at Torwood Stadium in the same year, when we won 3-1 in a league game and what makes me proud even today is that I marked Adam Ndlovu out of the game.

Best venue played in

Barbourfields Stadium; well-maintained and allows you to show your skills freely. I really enjoyed playing there.

My Best coach

There are three; Benedict Moyo, Philemon Dangarembwa and Barry Daka. Moyo is one of the most talented tacticians the country has ever seen. Given a chance, he can even do wonders with the big teams.

My Best Warriors squad

Muzondiwa Mugadza, Mercedes Sibanda, Netsai Moyo, Alex Maseko, John Phiri, Willard Khumalo, Peter Ndlovu, Kennedy Nagoli, Shakeman Tauro, Joel Luphahla, Methembe Ndlovu. The coach can be Roy Barreto.
