MDC urges SADC to get involved 13-08-07)

Lusaka, Zambia - The MDC appreciates that SADC has admitted that there
is a crisis in Zimbabwe requiring an urgent solution. The Tanzania extra
ordinary summit and the subsequent appointment of President Mbeki of South
Africa to mediate in the crisis in an welcome indication that this impor

tant
African institution is on the correct path towards a lasting solution to the
Zimbabwe crisis. The MDC is fully committed to the SADC initiative and
expects that SADC will from now on ward attempt to implement measurable
bench marks to ensure that the process does not remain open ended.
Zimbabwe is facing Presidential and Parliamentary elections in March 2008 and it
is vital that the regional body ensures that the positive conclusion of
the process dove tails into next year parliamentary elections and the
presidential plebiscite. The MDC is further mindful and appreciative of
the manner in which the regional body has grappled with this thorny African
problem. Indeed the Zimbabwe problem is an African problem which calls
for an African solution and by embarking on this initiative it is quite
clear that SADC has once again demonstrated its willingness to accept Africa
burdens. Our abiding hope is that once SADC has identified a problem
the resolution process must be pushed to its logical conclusion. There must
be a solution generally acceptable to the majority of Zimbabweans

We are in Lusaka because we believe that as a significant political
player in Zimbabwe, MDC has a positive contribution to make in terms of
assisting SADC to arrive at a broader and more comprehensive picture of the
multifaceted dimensions of the Zimbabwe problems. We are convinced that
our humble input into the process would enable the regional groping to lay
a solid foundation for a lasting solution to the crisis.
