his fingers into the till of the Media and Information Commission.
Apparently he needed the money to augment his salaries from the Polytech and the MIC which, combined, could not keep pace with galloping inflation. Surprise, surprise! I wonder if he ever spares a thought for the 85% of Zimbabweans who don’t even have one job.
What is definitely not a surprise is that the not-so-illustrious Mahoso could have stooped so low. After all, he left the National Arts Council in the 1980’s under a cloud because of funds that had mysteriously gone missing during his tenure as chairman.
But then of course we are all well aware of Zanu (PF)’s strategy of using the weaknesses of its stalwarts as a control tool to ensure that they continue singing from the party hymnbook. Their ranks are full of petty criminals like Mahoso who now cannot afford to bite the hand that feeds them or to raise their voice in any way against the increasing excesses of the party that has become a monster. They are pathetic victims of their own veniality who have sold their souls to the devil.
Apparently Mahoso has not only been feeding his family with the MIC’s funds, he has also been using the commission’s lawyers, paid for by the commission, to attend to his personal affairs. And it looks as though his term of office, which expired last week, will be renewed as the deputy minister of information, our not-so-Bright Matonga says: “Mahoso won’t be going anywhere as he has done an excellent job.”
Yes we know! Ask Mrs Mahoso – she’s very happy.
Mahoso is just one of many who have fallen into the Zanu (PF) “give-him-enough-rope-to-hang-himself and then he’ll be ours forever” trap. Look at the MDC turncoat Sekesayi Makwavarara – who has been so well rewarded despite her bungling and cheating at the Harare Commission. The once Sunshine City of Africa is knee-deep in garbage, the water is so foul that it is undrinkable, the roads are falling to pieces. What has been and Ms. Makwavarara’s response? She buys herself a satellite dish, lavishly furnishes her grace-and-favour mansion, jets to Moscow, tries to sell herself council property at a fraction of its real value and gives her self a hefty raise without authorisation.
And the government’s response? – why, naturally, her tenure has just been renewed.
The volume of the Zanu (PF) praise singers has just been turned up. In fact the roof of Town House is now in danger of lifting off, so loudly is Sekesayi singing.
By the way, I have been sent some interesting employment statistics: Population yemuZimbabwe is about 12 million. 5.3 million are retired. That leaves 6.7 million to do the work. There are 4.5 million in school, which leaves 2.2 million to do the work. Of this there are 1.13 million marovha, leaving 1.07 million to do the work. 0.5 million are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 0.57 million to do the work. Take from the total the 251,000 people who work for central and local government and that leaves 0.319 million to do the work. At any given time it is estimated there are 190,000 people in hospital, leaving 129,000 to do the work.
115,000 are war veterans and there are 114,998 people in prisons. That leaves vanhu 2 to do the work. You and me. And you’re sitting at your computer uchitoverenga majokes (writing jokes). And I am left alone. Ndingasimudzire Zimbabwe yacho ndega sei?
