HARARE - President Robert Mugabe owns a mansion in Malaysia and his wife, Grace, runs businesses in foreign countries, according to highly-placed sources.
Following the recent exposure by The Zimbabwean of

the looting of millions of US dollars from the Reserve Bank by the president and senior party officials, sources have come forward to allege that Mugabe owns a number of properties in foreign countries.
A source within Zanu (PF) circles of power told The Zimbabwean that Mugabe had purchased a multimillion US dollar mansion in Malaysia in 2005.
“He purchased it using his own funds. The first lady runs a number of businesses, specialising in African attire and craftwork in Malaysia, China and Singapore,” said the source, who cannot be identified for security reasons.
This information was independently confirmed by a source in Malaysia, who has seen the property.
“He owns a mansion here (in Malaysia), which he bought two years ago. That is where he stays with his family each time they visit the country. They were here recently when he was on leave,” said the source.
Several previous media reports have alleged that Mugabe imported expensive building materials from Malaysia to build his controversial mansion in Borrowdale Brooke.
But he claimed that the building material was donated to him. However, sources close to him said he paid for them “and they cost a lot of money”.
The source said the estimated cost of the materials was US$5 million. Construction of the mansion was completed last year and the president now spends most of his time there.
An estimated amount of US$20 million has been milked from the RBZ by Mugabe and other senior government officials since 1980 through the breach of regulations requiring them to surrender funds issued to cover them for emergencies each time they travel outside the country on state business.
Documents at hand show that some RBZ officials were tortured and subsequently fired in the 1990s when they compiled statistics on the looting and threatened to expose the scam.
