Large crowds attend ‘Free & Fair’ rallies

CHITUNGWIZA
More than 20 000 people turned up at a Free and Fair Election MDC (Tsvangirai) rally at Huruyadzo shopping centre in St Mary's on Sunday, according to party spokesman Nelson Chamisa.
The party is holding "Free and Fair Election rallies" countrywide to drum up national support

for a level playing field ahead of next year’s polls. Rallies have already been held in Manicaland, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Harare, Mashonaland East, Midlands North and Midlands South.
“Large crowds have turned out to make a bold statement that they will not allow Robert Mugabe to continue his legacy as a habitual thief who perennially steals the people’s vote,” said Chamisa.
This week, Tsvangirai and his team will be travelling to White City Stadium in Bulawayo.
Tsvangirai and secretary-general Tendai Biti addressed the crowd at Huruyadzo at a colourful function punctuated by song, dance and poetry. Biti said the geriatric Zanu (PF) leadership had dismally failed to rise to the challenge of running a modern economy and urged people to register to vote in large numbers in next year’s polls.
Tsvangirai said the MDC was ready to govern and lead the country. The party, he said, had a workable economic blueprint that would rescue Zimbabwe’s economy from the mire. He said a Zanu (PF) victory in the next election would be a death sentence for Zimbabwe, adding that people should turn out in massive numbers to make a bold statement against tyranny, starvation and a general decline in their standard of living.
He said the MDC was genuine in its commitment to the SADC talks, but Mugabe was busy playing hide-and-seek with regional leaders and had no genuine political will to be part of the negotiation process.
He deplored the government blitz to force all businesses to slash prices of goods and services, saying this was only a short honeymoon ahead of acute shortages of basic goods and services. – Staff reporter
