Amendment Bill mandates the two houses of parliament sit as an electoral court to choose the president of the country in the event of death or health failure. It is also believed that the clause works in the event of Mugabe stepping down voluntarily. Zanu (PF) insiders have said Mugabe deliberately came up with that clause in order to prepare the way of Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono.
The various factions within Zanu (PF) are therefore going all out to sponsor their candidates so that they will have majority backing in both the Senate and House of Assembly.
“The jockeying and campaigning has started and there is a lot of tension within the party right from the grassroots levels as the leaders of the various factions try to sponsor candidates,” a source said. “Indeed, it has been sparked by the clause in the amendment bill regarding succession and there is blood and thunder.” – Itai Dzamara
