Three years ago, the council outsourced grave digging and the maintenance of cemeteries, but since last month the private companies have not been digging graves after their workers downed tools, pressing for better working conditions.
Council was forced to recruit labourers on contract basis to fill the gap but has admitted it was failing to attract enough grave-diggers to fill the void created by the private companies.
“The situation is very disheartening because people are having to wait for more than a week before they can bury their loved ones,” said councillor Thaba Moyo. Â
“Our people are already overburdened by the economic situation and they can not afford to sustain such long mourning periods.” – CAJ News
