It has been established that members of the army, police and municipal police are being roped in to help with invigilation of examinations because of an acute shortage of teachers. Sources at the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) say there is a massive leak of exam papers.
The Zimbabwean this week saw two copies of O-Level Physics and Chemistry question papers still to be written being sold on the streets in central Harare. Candidates were buying copies at Z$2 million each.
Efforts to obtain official comment from ZIMSEC were in vain, as the lady at the reception repeatedly said “there is nobody to attend to your queries”. Education minister Aenias Chigwedere was also not available for comment. Â
“It is utter chaos and this must be the worst year in terms of ZIMSEC’s running of examinations,” a source from the council said on condition of anonymity. – Itai Dzamara
