Political violence – the escalating tide

KWEKWE - New evidence of violence against opponents of Zimbabwe's Government in the run-up to next March's joint presidential and parliamentary elections has been obtained by The Zimbabwean, despite spirited official rebuttals to allegations of an escalating tide of State-sponsored violence.

Families of victims have spoken of beatings, murders and disappearances, in interviews conducted at secret safe houses for opposition supporters.

One such victim was Clement Takaendesa, an MDC activist murdered last Saturday. Clement’s family says he was killed by Retired Brigadier General Benjamin Mabenge, a militant thug linked to the ruling Zanu (PF) party.

Clement and Taurai Chigede were shot at point blank range while fishing in the Mbembeswani River, just outside Kwekwe. Chigede miraculously survived and is currently battling for his life in a Kwekwe hospital.

It has taken Clement’s family several days to obtain permission to bury him, because of his opposition affiliation. He was, however, finally buried on Wednesday in Gokwe.

Brig Gen Mabenge has been arrested. But it was unclear if any charges had been preferred against him.
