Minutes taken by the party chairman Lovemore Moyo at the Bulawayo meeting three weeks ago, when a new leadership headed by Theresa Makone was chosen, refer to the process as having been authentic as well as “overwhelmingly” endorsed by the legitimate delegates from the Women’s Assembly. Â
These are the minutes the MDC national executive has been waiting for before making a decision on the contentious issue of the WA leadership.
“The Chairman put it to the floor whether the women would accept the dissolution decision to stand to which there was overwhelming consensus to dissolve the assembly and start anew,” the minutes read. “The chairman also noted that the dissolution of the WA had been contested in the High Court and the court reinforced the legality of the decision taken by the Standing Committee.
“The Chairman sought from the Electoral College if they could appoint an interim committee so as to have functionality in the WA. The Electoral College responded overwhelmingly for the conduct of a congress. They also agreed to have an election as the final election until the next congress in 2011.”
Other confidential information further disproves Matibenga’s allegations of the Bulawayo meeting having lacked legitimacy because she was barred from entering. “Matibenga was not a candidate because none of the 12 provinces of the party had nominated her for any of the eight positions in the WA national leadership,” the information states. “She was not a delegate to the meeting because she doesn’t hold any position in the party structures, she is just a card-carrying member.”
It is also reported that Matibenga failed to organize “even a single meeting of the WA executive since she was elected at the 2006 March Congress.”
