Speaking at a seminar here on Thursdays, Secretary-General of Botswana Christian Alliance, Bishop David Modiega, said Christians from the SADC region had a role to play in making sure the Zimbabwe elections were not rigged, but were free and fair.
He said before the departure to Zimbabwe, the delegation’s bishops would first meet with Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, following grave concerns raised over President Thabo Mbeki’s questionable mediation between the ruling party and the opposition in Zimbabwe.
Christians have a role to play in making sure there is no blood to be split in the forthcoming election. As Christians, our desire is to see Zimbabwe return to its position of being the breadbasket of Southern Africa.
We are praying day and night for peace to return in Zimbabwe. In my country Botswana, sometimes we put on black ribbon to mourn the death of democracy in Zimbabwe. Millions of Zimbabweans are living abroad as a result of both political persecution and economic meltdown, said Bishop Modiega.
Speaking at the same ceremony, Swaziland’s Hlobisile Nxumalo, called upon all Christians in the region to unite and join hands with the people of Zimbabwe that currently live in exile.
We have similar problems in our country Swaziland where there is no democracy. But the Swaziland issue is not out of context as compared to the Zimbabwe crisis. Nevertheless, we still need very powerful prayers so that we move out of bondage, said Nxumalo.
