Zimbabwe's opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) on Monday confirmed its call for a general strike starting Tuesday demanding the Zimbabwe electoral commission ZEC to immediate results of the presidential elections.

MDC reiterated its call after the High Court rejected its legal bid to force the release of election results legal.

“We are calling on the public to speak against ZEC for failing to release the results. We have called for a mass stay-in, starting tomorrow, until the results are released, MDC vice president Thokhozani Khupe said.

The MDC has announced plans to stage a general strike on Tuesday if results are not released by then.

Southern African leaders who met in Zambia over the weekend to discuss the impasse only called for the results to be announced “expeditiously”, saying the matter should be decided by the courts and the electoral commission.

MDC South Africa Office Spokesperson Nqobizitha Mlilo also confirmed that his party will resume massive strikes tomorrow,
