Two weeks ago the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe dismissed an application by Nolbert Kunonga, the former Bishop of Harare, to take control of Harare’s 58 Anglican churches.
Earlier, the High Court had given and order for Kunonga to share the cathedral with the new bishop, Sebastian Bakare, who is recognised by the Anglican Church as the authentic bishop of Harare.
Kunonga, an avid supporter of Robert Mugabe who has benefited from the land grab, has totally ignored the order with the assistance of the police. Last week the commissioner of police, Augustine Chihuri, assured Zimbabweans that the ZRP would maintain law and order ahead of the June 27 poll, but the police and CIO are at the forefront of intimidating and harassing congregants who support Bishop Bakare.
Two weeks ago scores of worshipers were beaten up during a service in St Francis Church, Waterfalls.
Frustrated by the connivance between the police and Kunonga, Bakare said he would ask other church leaders to “lend us their churches from next Sunday so our congregations can continue to worship”.
He also said: “We will also sue the commissioner of police. We know the orders are coming from high up, not from ordinary policemen.”
The police have accused priests aligned to Bakare of supporting the MDC. Â
