Zimbabwe Vigil Diary

- 17th May 2008

LONDON – Vigil supporters were in shock to hear that three of our friends from the Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR) had been killed. They were apparently shot at point-blank range at a road block. We are distraught. Sketchy details were given by Ephraim Tapa, one of the Vigil founders, who reported on his recent visit to South Africa to promote ROHR. He made contact with a large number of Zimbabwean exiles and told us of the difficulties of their lives there. People without papers are constantly stopped by the authorities and money is demanded. In the case of women who have no money they are forced to go off in a car with the police officer and are raped. For Zimbabwean women the formula is: no papers + no money = rape. 145 signed the register.
