Africa needs a new breed of leadership – ACDP

HARARE
Africa needs a new breed of leadership to replace rogues and dictators like Mugabe, says African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) President, the Rev. Kenneth Meshoe.

The harassment and detention of the UK and US diplomats by the Zimbabwean police is not only shocking and outrageous, but is a classical proof of how spiteful and arrogant President Robert Mugabe and his government are, said Meshoe. Even the SADC mediator, President Mbeki, who has so far refused to condemn the cruelty of President Mugabe and his Zanu (PF) government, should condemn the harassment of diplomats who should be enjoying protection by their host government.

Meshoe commended the courage of the Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, who broke ranks with African leaders too timid to condemn pre-election intimidation and violence in Zimbabwe, by saying that President Mugabe and Zimbabwe were an embarrassment to the entire continent.

The ACDP hopes that the SADC leadership were listening and heard him with both ears, said Meshoe. Unless the international community and the AU put pressure on President Mugabe to allow opposition parties to campaign freely, Zimbabwe will never have free and fair elections.

Africa needs a new breed of leadership that is committed to principles of integrity and justice for all, to replace rogues and dictators who oppress and torture their own people like President Robert Mugabe.
