BULAWAYO - Thirty-Four MDC supporters were remanded in custody when they appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of severely beating war veterans who were leading a terror campaign against villagers for Robert Mugabe's re-election bid.

They argue that they were defending themselves when they came under attack from the war veterans who had unleashed a wave of terror targeting MDC supporters on 9 and 13 June at Sibhula area in Gwanda North.

The 34, who have been languishing in police cells following their arrest on 13 June appeared at the Gwanda Magistrates Court on Monday, and were denied bail by provincial magistrate, Ernest Chidawanyika.
