Soldiers Meet Journalists

MASVINGO - The Zimbabwe National Army has invited journalists working for both the public and independent media to a one day familiarisation workshop.
The invitations were extended by Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) headquarters, 4 Brigade's commander, Brigadier Albios Mtisi.

Of late the army has been in the media for wrong reasons. There have
been numerous stories about soldiers vandalising, looting property and
terrorising the public as a result of delayed or inadequate salaries. A
number of soldiers have deserted the army and fled to neighbouring
countries citing poor salaries and hunger in the barracks.

In the past two weeks, soldiers have been accused of carrying out a
spate of robberies in and around Masvingo. Some of the
soldiersreportedly robbed patrons USd 1 000 at Chigudu and Sarudzai
nightclubs in the city last week, and tried to resist arrest. They were
only arrested after the police set their vicious dogs upon them.

In another incident, two absentee soldiers who had stolen a rifle with
several rounds of ammunition, were arrested in Chiredzi after a series
of carjackings and rampant Rhino poaching.
