BULAWAYO The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) will later this year review representation on its board that is dominated by lawyers rather than journalists, chairman John Gambanga has said.

Responding to queries by journalists why there were more lawyers sitting on the board of the self-regulatory council than there were media practitioners, Gambanga said the matter would be discussed at the councils annual general meeting later this year.
This issue has been raised at many forums by journalists and we are going work on this issue at the next VMCZ annual general meeting later this year. If you want you can recommend for the amendment of the constitution, Gambanga told journalists at the Bulawayo Press Club last Wednesday.
The matter of who should sit on the board generated heated debate among journalist at a conference organized by the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe (MAZ) last year with some journalists insisting they and not lawyers should constitute the majority on the councils board.
The VMCZ is the brainchild of the MAZ an alliance brining together the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ) and Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Zimbabwe). The Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (ZINEF) and Zimbabwe Association of Editors (ZAE) also work with the MAZ.
