Three arrested over diamonds

diamond__pieceMUTARE Police here arrested three foreigners last week for illegally possessing 25 pieces of rough diamonds. The three who appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate Livingstone Chipadze are Mayanga Gerald (45), Maugue Justino (26) and Amar Boisum (34).


Chipadze denied the trio bail after concurring with the state that there were chances that the three would escape from the courts jurisdiction if granted bail, as their nationalities remained unknown to the court.The three were represented by Victor Mazengero of Mugadza, Mazengero and Dhliwayo Legal Practitioners.

Prosecutor Nelson Makunyire told the court alleged that the three were found in possession of the pieces of diamonds after a police raid on number 8 Tatonga Drive in Morningside Mutare, where the three reside. The police raided the house and found the pieces of diamonds on a table. After some police interrogations, the three failed to produce a permit authorising them to deal with diamonds leading to their arrest, said the prosecutor.

He said the three accused contravened section 3 (1) of the Precious Stones Trade Chapter 26:06.
