Addressing a public meeting organized by Bulawayo Agenda in the city last week Makumbe claimed that Zanu (PF) hardliners and state security commanders were behind the ongoing campaign to arrest, harass and torture MDC activists as a way to pressure Tsvangirai to accede to granting a blanket amnesty for political crimes committed over the past 29 years.
Makumbe, a long time critic of Mugabes controversial rule, said the best strategy was for Tsvangirai to agree to the request for amnesty but the UZ lecturer appeared to suggest that the MDC could turn back on the amnesty agreement and punish perpetrators of human rights abuses once a new and democratic constitution was in place to punish .
Some Zanu PF and security chiefs who committed crimes in the past are still harassing and directing the victimization of MDC supporters asking to be granted amnesty .The MDC leader should grant them amnesty and then after finishing drafting the new constitution you deal with them, said Professor Makumbe.
Makumbe also accused some Zanu PF gurus of working day and night to destroy the inclusive government whilst Zimbabweans are desperate to work as they have suffered a lot.
Addressing the same gathering, Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) leader, Jenni Williams said there was not much that had changed following the formation the new inclusive as police were still harassing activists and media controls remained in place.
We will continue with our street demonstrations until the inclusive government brings change. We cant say there is change when police are still harassing political activists, POSA and AIPPA still there, said Williams.
