ZCA in rural awareness push

ruralBULAWAYO - At least 1 000 constitutional awareness meetings have been lined up by the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA), to educate communities on the importance of taking part in the crafting of a new constitution.

Speaking during a consultative meeting in the city, Reverand Useni Sibanda, National Director of the ZCA, said the awareness meeting would have a strong bias towards rural areas.

The organization planned to present its own proposal document for the Christian constituency focusing mainly on social justice, peace building and the value for human life.

It is the view of the church that national healing could be achieved through decentralization of power. By so doing, no community would feel marginalised and this would augur well with the spirit of inclusiveness, said Sibanda.

He said there was need for proportional representation in the electoral system if there was to be consensus in the creation of a people driven constitution. However, he said the proposed four months consultation period was too short.

We would love to have more time to ensure that we get as many people involved as possible, he said. Speaking at the same meeting, minister of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Eric Matinenga, said no single grouping had a monopoly over the constitution making process.

He challenged the church to go out and play their part to ensure a real people driven constitutional making process. The church has the biggest constituency as about 75 per cent of Zimbabweans are Christians, he said.
