Senator Kombayi died at his Ridgemont home after battling for 19 years with gun-shot wounds inflicted during the state sponsored violence of 1990. He was buried at his homestead in Ridgemont, Gweru.
Giving a keynote address at the burial, MDC Secretary-General Hon Tendai Biti described Senator Kombayi as a selfless cadre whose contribution to pre and post independent Zimbabwe was uncontestable. He was a true democrat, a liberation war hero who invested his wealth and profits in the continued fight for democracy, freedom and equality. said Hon Biti.
During the liberation struggle Senator Kombayi was the heartbeat of the liberation struggle providing food, transport and clothes to freedom fighters in Zambia. Hon Biti also said it was disappointing to note that Kombayi had not been accorded his liberation war hero status.
Kombayi deserves to be buried at the national heroes acre like all the liberation war heroes and it is sad that the very people he assisted during the struggle have not recognised his contributions up until death he said Also present were deputy secretary general, Hon Tapiwa Mashakada, national organising secretary, Engineer Elias Mudzuri, national womens chairperson Hon Theresa Makone, the national youth chairman Hon Thamsanqa Mahlangu , Zanu PF politiburo member Rugare Gumbo, provincial leaders, MPs, Senators and councillors.
Senator Kombayi leaves behind his wife Mavis and six children.
