Militia posing as youth officers, say parents

There have been growing concerns over the alleged emergence of Zanu (PF) youth bases at rural schools in the province, with worried parents calling on the education ministry to look into the matter. The MDC provincial office says it has been inundated with reports from parents around the province who say some rural schools are housing members of the Zanu (PF) youth militia posing as youth officers.

Parents around Mukore Secondary School wrote a letter to the MDC provincial office last week claiming there was a militia base at the school. The parents wrote that the youths were on the government payroll and are members of Zanu (PF) gangs.
In Mwenezi, it was also reported that bases have been set up at Mukita Secondary School, and Rushumbe and Chengwe Primary Schools.
In Masvingo Central, parents have complained about a militia base at Musarasara Primary School.
Parents have said the youths are working with the Zanu (PF) leadership in the area to push for the Kariba draft constitution.
The party, however, has said the allegations are unfounded.
