Home Affairs co-minister, Kembo Mohadi said something was being done to improve the standards of the country’s museums and monuments.

“It is true that most of the country’s museums and monuments are in dilapidated states and the government has no intention whatsoever of leaving things the way they are now. We have not neglected the sites but we are moving in to improve the standards of our museums and monuments and the only way we can do that is by increasing the rates. We used to charge very paltry figures as entry fees, but we have since realised that we need to commercialise rates if we are to make any meaningful improvements to these sites of cultural and historical importance,” said Mohadi.

He made reference to the national Heroes’ Acre where he said entry was free while other museums and monuments were still charging unrealistically low rates.

The co-minister added that the commercialisation process would see them getting revenue that would be used in developing the museums and monuments countrywide.
