Court to rule on students application

justiceBULAWAYO -- A Harare magistrate will on Tuesday delivers judgment on an application for refusal of demand filed by four student leaders accused of leading a strike over high tuition fees at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ).

Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi set the date after the students lawyer, Jeremiah Bamu from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), filed an application for removal from remand of the student leaders following their arrest early this month.

Zimbabwe National Union Students Union (ZINASU) president, Clever Bere and three other representatives of the students union, Kudakwashe Chakabva from the Harare Polytechnic, Archieford Mudzengi from the Zimbabwe School of Mines, and Brian Rugondo from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) were arrested on charges of inciting violence at the UZ over high tuition fees.

They are out of custody on US$30 bail following their initial court appearance. However, in his application, Bamu argued that there was no reasonable suspicion that the four committed any offence.
