“The company has no money to pay us. We have reached an agreement with the company owners that we run the company for now since they cannot afford to pay us,” said Simbarashe Mwale, a worker. However, they said the arrangement was temporary as the owners were still trying to find ways to keep the company running. The company owner, Collin Kelly, could not be reached for comment as he was in South Africa. The workers also said that they had been finding it difficult to survive, especially after the introduction of the multi currency system.
“Our children are no longer going to school because we cannot afford to pay the school fees. Some of our colleagues have been evicted from where they were renting after failing to pay their rent. They have no where to go,” said a worker who requested anonymity.
The chairperson of the workers committee, Steven Dube, said they had tried approaching various labour organisations in an attempt to solve their problem but this had not yielded any positive results. “We have approached many labour organisations with our case but they claimed to be very busy handling other cases. This is why we have taken this initiative because we have suffered for a long time and cannot continue living like this. We want Kelly to allow us to do what he has granted us until we get back on our feet,” said Dube.
