Churches pray for rains in Mat South

water_shortagesGWANDA -- Christians from different church denominations will today converge at the Brethren in Christ Church (BICC) here to pray to the heavens to open up this farming season and let abundant rains fall upon Matabeleland South province, a region ravaged by droughts and resultant hunger over the past few years. BICC church leader Thabo Ncube urged Christians to turn out in large numbers for the mass prayer for rain.

All churches will converge here on Sunday to pray for rains and please come in your numbers, said Ncube.

The prayer session comes at a time when most water sources in the arid province have dried-up making search for water a daily challenge for both people and animals.

In many cases people have to walk distances of up to 15 km to get water for household use, while several families have reported losing livestock due to water shortage and poor pastures after a prolonged dry period.

Poor harvests because of erratic rains last season means many families also do not have adequate food in addition to lacking enough drinking water.

But it remains to be seen whether the communitys prayers today for abundant rains this season will be answered.
