The maize would be distributed in the districts of Gokwe, Shurugwi and Chirumhanzu. The seed maize is being distributed through local non-governmental organisation, Christian Care.
Each household is also expected to receive 50 kg bag of compound D fertilizer on top of their maize seed allocation.
Christian Care National Director and Reverend, Forbes Matonga, urged recipients of the seed and fertiliser to make good use of it and desist from selling it or consuming it.
We have already received some disturbing reports that some of the beneficiaries in the programme are selling the seed. If that trend continues people will always rely on donations, he said.
He said the support was being given to the villagers so that they could be self-sufficient and that could only be attained through hard work.
Last year, a lot of people did not have a good harvest and this is because they did not have seed on time. It is our hope that they would have a better harvest this year owing to the support they have been given, he said.
Christian Care has so far distributed 75 tonnes of seed maize and 250 tonnes of Compound D fertilizer to five thousand homesteads in the district of Gokwe alone.
Seed is being given to those families with pieces of land, manpower and with fewer than four cattle. Orphaned and the vulnerable children were given priority. Steven Nyathi
