UNDP to honour volunteer of the year

undp_logoHARARE The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a new award to honour organisations or individuals who display outstanding volunteering qualities within their communities.

Entries for the Zimbabwe National Volunteer Award close tomorrow with the winner announced during International Volunteer Day (IVD) celebrations on December 5. The Core Group organising the 2009 commemoration of IVD will present a Volunteer Award to an outstanding local volunteer organisation, group, corporate body or individual, UNDP said. The winning volunteer should have displayed outstanding and unique volunteering qualities within a specific community or field during the period from January 2009 to date.

The recipient must be involved in activities ranging from community and home-based care, orphans and vulnerable children, environment,gender and women empowerment, people with disabilities, youths, treatment, care and support, and other areas where volunteerism is involved. The Zimbabwean theme for the 2009 celebrations is Volunteering for our Planet: Rebuilding Zimbabwe.
