The meeting had been called by ZSPC officials to identify and register victims of political violence, particularly those villagers who were severely affected by political violence before and during the build up to the June 27, 2008 presidential run-off elections.
The chairperson of ZSPC, Moses Dendere, said his officials were forced to abandon the exercise after marauding Zanu (PF) supporters besieged the venue of the meeting and threatened the officials.
“When Zanu (PF) supporters in the area heard about the meeting they quickly organized themselves and disrupted the meeting, said Dendere. The supporters were accusing our organisation of being British-sponsored.
Dendere said the Zanu (PF) supporters, led by Brain Mwaruta, questioned the ZSPC’s officials about the operation of the organisation and handed a hand written list of 50 villagers whom they claimed were victims of MDC-orchestrated violence in the area.
Despite the disruptions, Dendere vowed to complete the exercise. “What happened on Saturday has really made us stronger. We have already devised other means of registering victims so that we can quickly assist them to start new lives,” he said. The organization has so far distributed food and building materials in Gokwe, Nyanga and Masvingo.
