MARONDERA - A recent MDC party structure audit conducted here, has revealed that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirais support base is growing in both urban and rural areas. The increase in supporters has partly been attributed to defections from Zanu (PF) and new membership from traditionally non-active members of society.
According to the party district information officer, Dominic Matangira, the MDC has more than 250 executive members at ward level while a constituency boosts of more than 2500 portfolio holders.
Registration of new membership in the district is overwhelming. An average 150 people are quietly joining the party on daily basis. Zanu (PF) supporters crossing the political floor to MDC confess that, it has dawned on them days of Mugabes party are over. Political change in the country is irreversible. They say they are joining MDC secretly as they fear reprisals from die hard Zanu (PF) supporters, Matangira said.
MDC support mobilization exercises will continue until new elections are held, according to Matangira.
Former Zanu (PF) supporters who have jumped the sinking Mugabe ship said: Our continued attendance at Zanu (PF) meetings is not anything to read much about, as our allegiance is with the MDC. We will show face at the Zanu (PF) gatherings only for security reasons, said an activist.
