The discovery of Mapfumo Marks and Manyaira Reliances illegal status in the country was uncovered after they assaulted photographers in June this year. They evaded prosecution then as they were said to be acting in the interests of their client, Bona Mugabe.

However, further investigations into the pairs situation by the Department of Justice has led to a case being built against the them, and could see them facing a jail sentence of up to two years.

They were spared prosecution because the Department of Justice ruled that they were acting out of concern for the safety of Bona Mugabe, who studies in Hong Kong.

According to sources, the police will be conducting formal interviews with the bodyguards. The Department of Justice would not comment on whether any legal action would be taken against the Mugabe family over the incident.

The Hong Kong government has been lambasted for not applying the law fairly in the case of the Mugabes. This has been attributed by critics as a fear of upsetting Beijing, which enjoys a profitable relationship with Zimbabwe.
