This follows his surprising election into the Central Committee during the staged Congress in December last year. Shamuyarira, the veteran Zanu (PF) spokesperson, has been gradually withdrawing from the public eye, with his deputy spokesperson, Ephraim Masawi, taking over his responsibilities.
“The party wants Jonathan Moyo to have an influential position similar to the one he had before he was expelled from the party. Their are two vacancies, that of party spokesperson and also the post of National Commissar that was left vacant following the death of Elliot Manyika,” said a party source.
Moyo, who surprised many Zimbabweans by rejoining Zanu (PF) towards the end of last year, was elected into the party important Central Committee. The move angered loyal Zanu (PF) chefs and was used by President Robert Mugabe as a launch pad for the glib tongued political scientist who spends his time demonizing opposition leaders.
“Mugabe regards Moyo as a spin doctor who is capable of turning the fortunes for Zanu (PF) as he did for the party after the rejection of the 2000 Draft Constitution,” said the source. With a reshuffling of the cabinet unlikely Moyo is said to have set his sights on the position of spokesperson.
“Moyo could have been made the Commissar but there is a faction in the party that is not even happy that he is back in the central committee, so he cannot take that position,” said the spokesperson.
Moyo is responsible for the closure of several newspapers in the country and was expelled from Zanu (PF) in 2005 after the Tsholotsho Declaration he had organised to secure the nomination of Defence Minister Emerson Mnangangwa as the party Vice President.
