The army had expected at least 100 potential recruits from this Mashonaland East Provincial Capital, but no more than 30 showed an interest. 12 of the youths had already been recruited, but were bussed to the area to make up the numbers.
We were attested in Harare, but were instructed to convene here and make up numbers to give an impression the recruitment exercise was a massive crowd puller, said a youth from Rusike in the town.
Of the few people recruited, five were female and 25 were male.
The army is engaged in a massive countrywide recruitment exercise for general duty soldiers. People with specialist training, are considered for special assignments within the force.
While the entry age limit was 22 years, those with certificates from Border Gezi youth training centres were not disqualified on the basis of age.
Recruitment officers from the army 2 Brigade, attributed the low attendance to poor publicity.
