The UK embassy in Harare said London supported Finance Minister Tendai Bitis call for the restoration of Zimbabwes voting rights at the IMF. It said the British government was encouraged by recent improvement in the macroeconomic management of Zimbabwe under Biti which has seen a stabilisation in inflation, the restoration of key services, an increase in tax revenue and growth in the economy.
Support for restoration of Zimbabwes IMF voting rights is recognition of this progress, and forms part of Zimbabwes re-engagement with international financial institutions, the embassy
said in a statement. The statement also said the UK government welcomed Zimbabwes re-engagement with the IMF over the last year, which has underpinned economic reform in the country. The IMF board of directors is due to meet later this month to discuss the restoration of Zimbabwes voting rights which were suspended in 2003 after the country was in perennial arrears in its financial obligations to the Fund.
