Locals reject commission

chomboBINDURA - The MDCT lead Bindura municipality said it did not recognize the commission imposed by Local Government Urban and Rural Development minister, Ignatius Chombo (pictured), to investigate the alleged deterioration of services.

In an interview, the Bindura mayor, Councillor Daniso Wakatama, said: The appointment of the commission was irregular not procedural. Wakatama added: The Bindura municipality does not recognize the commission neither do they consider the investigation process. He described the move as a non event.

Defending their position, Wakatama said when Chombo came to Bindura, his office was informed that he was coming to access the councils state of preparedness to combat cholera in the face of an outbreak. Wakatama said they received the message that Chombo was coming with Energy and Power Engineer, Elias Mudzuri, and Water Resources Minister, Sipepa Nkomo.

Surprisingly he came on his own with an entirely different agenda, said the mayor. Wakatama said they should not be blamed for the current problems bedevilling the town as they inherited them from the former Zanu (PF)-lead council. We are not liable for the deterioration of services in the town. We inherited empty coffers and the council account was in the red, he said.

Wakatama said the decision to declare them incompetent was premature as they were struggling to bring a new face to the town.
