“Notice is being hereby given that the Competition and Tariff Commission is embarking on an investigation, in terms of Section 28 of the Competition Act [Chapter 14:28], into allegations of restrictive and unfair business practice in the music industry,” said a notice issued by the CTC director.
“In particular, the Commission is looking into competitive effects to musicians of the alleged practices by Ngaavongwe records/Gramma records/Zimbabwe Music Corporation of paying royalties not commensurate with sales and also binding musicians through their contracts.”
The Commission called on all interested persons or parties to submit written representations with regards to any restrictive and unfair business practices in the music industry at the Commission’s offices by not later than February 19, 2010.
“All written representations submitted to the Commission in relation to this investigation shall be treated in strict confidence and shall only be used for the purpose of this investigation,” the director said.
Many Zimbabweans have failed to benefit from their music because of restrictive conditions by recording companies.
