We dont care

farmLet us state clearly, for the record, that no rational, thinking Zimbabwean is against the principles of land reform and black empowerment.

These are both vitally important subjects that need to be tackled in any country emerging from a period of minority rule, anywhere on this planet.

What the majority of Zimbabweans ARE against is the way in which Zanu (PF) continues to tackle these two topics from a self-serving, short-sighted, idiotic standpoint that sounds the death knell for any hopes of our future progress towards becoming a member of the modern family of nations.

The tragedy of Zimbabwe is that these vital topics were NOT addressed more than 30 years ago when they should have been. That is now water under the bridge, but it is disingenuous to put it mildly – of Zanu (PF) to maintain now, in 2010, that it is trying to right colonial wrongs.

It is inconceivable that the aged and bloated kleptocracy that continues to rule us should dare to imagine that anyone believes its pathetic propaganda that the proposed indigenisation legislation will benefit ordinary Zimbabweans.

As with the mis-named land reform programme, the so-called empowerment legislation will benefit only Zanu (PF) functionaries and those connected to them.

As economist John Robertson so rightly points out elsewhere in this issue, Zimbabwe desperately needs foreign investment so why has the government chosen to make it the least attractive investment destination on earth?

The threat, contained in the regulations, of five years imprisonment for those chief executives failing to submit plans outlining their disposal of 51% of shares to indigenous Zimbabweans, is ludicrous. But in view of the Mugabe regimes track record, it is highly unlikely that any sane businessman will risk his neck no matter how profitable his business dealings might seem to be.

Our country desperately needs help we need fundamentals like food, water, housing, medicines, education. Above all, Zimbabweans desperately need jobs. And whether we like it or not, investment is the only way to sort out the mess that Zanu (PF) has made of our country during their 30-year reign of pillage.

So, in promulgating this new legislation, and threatening further measures to enrich its hangers on, Zanu (PF) has indeed sent a clear message to the world: we dont care about Zimbabweans.
