What does Covenant mean?

teach_me_your_waysThe scripture says that though Jesus blood, we have a new covenant, not the old with a little added onto it.

We in our modern society have lost the understanding of the word covenant. We have become so deceitful that mans word is no longer worth anything. When two people sign a contract, before they sign it they get their lawyers to go through the fine print just to make sure there is nothing untoward.

They then hire another lawyer to inspect the changes the first lawyer made! It is sad to say that in todays world nobody trusts anyone. Maybe the examples of world leaders and politicians have encouraged people to be deceitful.

In ancient times your word was kept through a covenant and normally blood was shed. There is a story that when Stanley explored Africa, looking for David Livingstone, he found it difficult because wherever he went the people kept stealing his goods. One of those who worked with him kept saying he should make a covenant with one of the chiefs. Initially Stanley rejected this as he considered it as a barbaric act. But it got so bad that he agreed to make a covenant with one of the chiefs.

Part of the covenant was anyone who attacked you attacked me and when the ceremony was completed, gifts were exchanged. Stanley had a nanny goat and he treasured it as it provided precious milk. The chief wanted the goat as his gift. Stanley was not happy with this, however he was persuaded to part with his goat. In exchange the chief gave Stanley his big spear that he carried around.

Stanley was disgusted with this gift and felt that once again he had been duped. Anyway he went ahead and carried the spear. He soon discovered that wherever he travelled, nobody stole from him. He realised that when the people saw the spear they knew who it used to belong to and that if they stole from Stanley, the chief would deal with them.

Friends we are in covenant with God Almighty! The God who created the universe! The God who causes the sun to rise every morning, the God who designed every snow flake, every blade of grass as unique! That is awesome. When you begin to receive revelation of that covenant, you will begin to believe the scripture that says in Hebrews, I will never leave you or forsake you, or in Romans, greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.

The reason we struggle so much is that we have not received revelation of Gods Word and we walk in unbelief, always doubting. – For previous columns in this series please see the website www.thezimbabwean.co.uk
