Dont miss Earth Hour – 8.30pm 27 March 2010

earthThis weekend the world comes together for a powerful global warming initiative that will see one billion people across the globe unite for a single purpose climate change.

The movement has taken the world by storm in the last 3 years and is set to make landfall in Zimbabwe this weekend.

The Zimbabwean and staff would like to invite all readers to join this powerful movement. Turn off your lights for one hour at 8.30pm wherever you are on Saturday 27 March, 2010.

One of the 7 Wonders of the World the pride of our nation, Victoria Falls has already pledged to observe the event with a candle-lit-vigil-viewing of the Falls. School children and dignitaries will be present to witness as our iconic landmark joins the likes of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, the Empire State Building in New York City, USA, the Sydney Opera House, in Sydney, Australia, Table Mountain, in Cape Town, South Africa, Hiroshima Peace Memorial, in Hiroshima, Japan, the Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and many more man-made and natural wonders around the globe.

Longyearbyen, the northernmost city in the world (halfway between Norway and the North Pole), is also switching off its lights this weekend. Organisers believe that this is a significant move by a city that risks the safety of its residents, who may be attacked by polar bears without the street lights on at that time of night. The reason that this citys participation is so important is that it is located in a region where the effects of climate change are most evident.

Stand and be counted Zimbabwe! Let us embrace a global movement that seeks to secure the future of our planet for our children and our childrens children. With confirmed participation from citizens of 115 countries around the world we stand poised to be part of the greatest civil action the world has ever seen. We can change the world. Join one billion people around the world at 8.30pm this Saturday and be the difference. Earth Hour is about hope and action.
