Swearing in of Marondera Mayor deferred

chomboMARONDERA - Local Government Minister, Ignatius Chombo (pictured), failed to swear in defiant Marondera Mayor on Friday, saying he was busy preparing for the independence celebrations that took place on Sunday.

Movement of Democratic Change (MDC) mayor, Farai Nyandoro, was supposed to have been sworn in on Friday. Ironically on the same day the mayor served the Minister with interdiction papers to prevent the appointment of Chombos hand-picked Zanu (PF) councillors.

Chombo said he was unable to swear-in Nyandoro as previously arranged, because he was committed with preparations for the 18th April Independence celebrations, said a council official.

Residents have also rejected the imposition of the three councillors.

The three are Ralph Chimanikire (Chombos nephew), Charity Govere and one Kochi. They are all former losing Zanu (PF) city fathers.

Chombo has previously postponed swearing in of the mayor.
