sunday_marimoJOHANNESBURG Former Warriors head Coach, Sunday "Mhofu" Chidzambwa has assumed his duties as head coach for Free State Stars on Friday, he told CAJ News Agency last Friday. (Pictured: Sunday Chidzambwa In charge at SAs Free State Stars)

However Chidzambwa will not be on the bench this afternoon when Free State Stars plays Bidvest Wits Football Club in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final. Instead caretaker coach Themba Sithole will guide the Bloemfoentien club when they wrestle with Mpumalanga Black Aces in Bloemfontein. Club spokesman, Mosikili Bothata, said the arrival of the Zimbabwean veteran coach would boost the Bloemfontein based premiership club’s chances of winning next season’s league title and other silverwares. “We are only hoping for the best out of Chidzambwa. He is a tried and tested coach with credentials (that) speak for themselves.

“He is the first coach to guide his country Zimbabwe into the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia, 2004, and has done a lot at club level with Dynamos,” said Bothata. Chidzambwa is undoubtedly the best ever coach Zimbabwe has produced in recent history but those who know the soft-spoken mentor say his he will deliver the results especially if his new employers are patient with him. But with club officials, supporters, fans and players alike expressing high hopes since Mhofus arrival, the fromer Warriors coach may find himself under immediate pressure to deliver even before he has had time to familiarise himself with the ABSA Premiership.

“The reception was good, and I also hope for the best with the club,” said Chidzambwa. He could not be drawn into revealing whether he was aiming to win the league championship in his first season at the ABSA league before representing the country at continental level. Chidzambwa could not reveal whether he would sign several players from his country to beef up the Free State Stars squad.
