Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers’ Union (ZCFU) president, Wilson Nyamboda, said most farmers were still harvesting Soya beans, while other farmers were clearing the land for tillage. “Financing is the major challenge facing most farmers as most were still sourcing capital to finance wheat farming,” said Nyamboda.
He said the major challenge was the unavailability of inputs from the government. “At the moment there has been no communication between us and the government with regards to the provision of inputs such as seed and diesel to fuel tractors,” said Nyamboda.
He said they were very much behind in terms of preparations. “We still have a three week window, farmers need to have put their things in order before the end of the month, failure to that it will threaten their yield at the end of it all,” said Nyamboda.
ZCFU’s Matabeleland North Provincial chairperson, Irene Maphenduka, said the farmers in the province were to meet next week to discuss their winter wheat cropping schedule.
