Gifts to North Korea spark controversy

BULAWAYO - A Bulawayo-based pressure group, Ibhetshu LikaZulu, which fights for the compensation of Gukurahundi victims, said President Robert Mugabe was celebrating the massacres by giving elephants as gifts to the North Korean communist leader Kim Jong II.

Last week two 18-month-old elephants, along with pairs of most other animal species, were captured from Hwange National Park on Mugabes orders and will soon be shipped to North Korea. There are fears that the elephants are unlikely to survive the long trip. This only shows that Mugabe is not apologetic for killing people from Matabeleland during the Gukurahundi massacres, said Ibhetshu LikaZulu chairman, Qhubekani Dube.

Last month, activists from Matabeleland and Midlands protested against plans by the government to bring the North Korean national soccer team to Zimbabwe for a training camp ahead of the World Cup in South Africa next month. The visit is now uncertain.
