UNICEF helps local schools

school_childrenHARARE - The United Nations Children's Educational Fund (UNICEF) is set to provide textbooks for all secondary school going children following a US$20 million saving made from the tender awarded to Longman Zimbabwe for the printing of primary school textbooks.

The awarding of the tender created acrimony between three publishing houses in the country, prompting Zimbabwe Publishing House (ZPH) and College Press to call for its suspension.

UNICEF spokesperson, Tsitsi Singizi said the savings obtained from awarding tender to Longman were going to immensely benefit the education sector in the country.

“It is important that we highlight that through a very transparent and well managed tender process, UNICEF managed to save around US$20 million. These savings represent the difference between every third child and every child receiving one. They will allow us to provide, for all secondary school children, which was not in the original plan,” said Singizi,

She added that through the Education Transition Fund, every child attending primary school would have a textbook in all the core subjects by the end of the year.
