Being a widow and a lady in her late forties, Eunice Wakatama has to carefully allocate time for her work a residents leader and her commitments to her family.
In an interview in Harare last Thursday, Wakatama said: There is nothing more satisfying to me than to be champion of the residents cause, we have to fight the inferiority complex that seem to follow most women in the high density areas. There has to be a solid ground for all women to stand on and demand quality service provision alongside their male counterparts.
She said it was important for women to be recognised through their deeds and not through the numerous statements they make in the media in order to be understood. Wakatama remains optimistic as ever that a time shall arrive when people from all walks of life will accept that women are as capable of leading as men.
Wakatama has led the residents of Mbare in community public meetings, clean up campaigns and stakeholder meetings to ensure there is quality service provision in Mbare. Residents need not mourn over their problems, said Wakatama. The Mbare Residents Trust is doing everything in its capacity to monitor service provision, working closely with elected councillors and service providers.
Wakatama said she strongly believes that womens empowerment and advancement in the communities remains under threat from seemingly respectable men who still think and view women as tools for their own success. She foresees Zimbabwe being led by a female president in the near future.
