Maphosa speaks out

HARARE - Former Mononotapa captain and Zimbabwe Saints utility player, Mthulisi Maphosa, who is now with Democratic Republic of Congo club, TP Mazembe, says football standards in DRC play second fiddle to Zimbabwe.

“It is only because of money that I can praise the league in DRC. In terms of football standards I think the Zimbabwean league is of better quality. Zimbabwe even has better football pitches. Currently at TP Mazembe we are using makeshift fields while our home ground in Lubumbashi is still being attended to,” said Maphosa.

Maphosa said Daniel Zokoto, Christopher Samakweri and Darryl Nyandoro were finding it extremely hard to feature regularly in TP Mazembe’s line up.

“It has become very hard to land first team jerseys at our new club because players who have played at the Africa Cup of Nations are given first preference. We have not seen action with regards to Champions League but I believe we should keep focused and guard against losing hope,” said Maphosa.

TP Mazembe has regularly featured at the African Champions league and they recently qualified for the mini- league stage.

According to Maphosa, the team has a pool of 40 players who have played in the champions’ league before, and for their national teams in the AFCON. He said he has managed to star in four league games of the eight matches played so far and he was very happy that he had managed to play his anchorman role.

“It is rather encouraging that I have featured in four league games of the eight played so far. In all the matches I played as an anchorman that is my comfortable position,” he added.
