New MDC party not launched, says Sikhala

job_sikhalaHARARE - The MDC-99 leader, Job Sikhala, (Pictured) has claimed before a court that he never launched his new party. Sikhala is accused of holding a public meeting at Adelaide Acres in Waterfalls without the authority of the police.

He, in turn, accused half informed media practitioners of making false reports that he had launched the party.

He was represented by his lawyer, Gift Nyandoro, who argued that it was a closed-door meeting which had been held on May 8 with his national executive (NEC) to move a motion for the adoption of forming a new party.

The NEC, being led by the accused, agreed on December 12 last year at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex. The adoption was wrongly translated by a sensational media that MDC-99 had been launched,” said Nyandoro.

He argued that the meeting was not open to members of the public and the press had to bulldoze their way in.

It was a closed meeting. Part of that meeting was to agree on a day of congress which would represent constituencies in Zimbabwe, he said.

Sikhala successfully applied for the cancellation of a warrant of arrest, which had earlier been issued against him and made an application for a refusal of remand hearing.

The former legislator is accused of breaching Section 25 of the Public Order and Security Act, which criminalises the holding of public gatherings without notifying the police.
