Prison bosses face sack over escape bid

HARARE - Three top Chikurubi maximum security prison officials are facing the sack after an investigation into the attempted escape of seven prisoners last April.

A board of enquiry recommended the dismissal of the officer-in-charge, Assistant Commissioner Pambai, his deputy, Chief Superintendent Tarwira, and the chief security officer, Superintendent Dumbura.

The entire prison staff could also be transferred to remote prisons in a bid to curb trafficking, it has emerged.

Sources within the prison service said the chairman of the investigating team, Assistant Commissioner Rhodes Moyo, found the there men liable for causing the attempted offence and had recommended their dismissal in a report, which was expected to be forwarded to the ZPS boss, Paradzai Willings Zimondi, this week.

“What was agreed upon by the investigating team was that the men failed to identify and prevent the attempted escape and therefore should be discharged from the service, said the source.

We also recommended the transfer of all officers who have been at the station for longer than three years because they were failing to command inmates with whom they have been interacting for a long time. For security reasons, they should be transferred to other stations.

According to the Prison Act, it is not automatic that an officer be discharged after being found guilty by a board of enquiry.

After the recommendations by the investigating team, the report is sent to the commissioner of prisons, who then makes his recommendations and forwards them to the public service commission for a final decision.
