18 killed in bus crash

bus_crashHARARE - Police say at least 18 people were killed Sunday when two buses smashed into a truck within seconds of each other. (Pictured; Road traffic accidents continue to claim the lives of Zimbabweans.)

At least 30 others were seriously injured in the accident, which happened on the Harare-Bulawayo road about 80 km west of the capital at 4.30am.

Police say the Two-Keys Transport truck had broken down and was stationary when it was hit by a Musanhi bus that veered off the road.

According to Zimbabwe Republic Police National Traffic Spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome, 13 people died on the spot while four others were critically injured and airlifted by a helicopter to the Chegutu District Hospital with one reported dead at Selous Hospital, few km from the scene of the accident. Six people on board died on the spot.

Seconds later a Mandaza Bus travelling in the same direction also rammed into the same truck and veered off the road before landing by the roadside killing seven passengers on the spot. The Mandaza bus was coming from Plumtree and had mainly cross- border traders aboard.
